I’ve been thinking a lot about the young people in my life right now. About how hard it is to be coming of age in the middle of so much change (for the good and bad) and uncertainty. There’s a lot pressure to figure your whole life out in the midst unprecedented uncertainty.
It made me want to play them a song. In many points of my life I’ve had this song on repeat in my ears to calm and centre myself back into just being in my life and enjoying what is happening now, versus all that I think I need to make happen next. There’s so much pressure in our society that we have to achieve everything in just a couple of decades of our life—usually our 20s and 30s. Don’t you believe it.
This song came out in 1977, I probably came to know it in the 80s. He didn’t even know about the internet and social media! LOL. I was so thrilled to see that today it’s one of Billy Joel’s most streamed songs. It started out as a B-side (in old vinyl record singles days they would put another song from the album on the back, the B-side, of really popular songs never expecting anyone to buy them for themselves). It turns out to be a perfect metaphor for slowing down and appreciating things in the moment because you never know the future value of your time spent. So give yourself permission to take the space and time you need to be ok and thrive while you are doing all you want to do in this world.
Listen to Billy.
