The first step to knowing what you want is allowing yourself to have the thought of what you want. As women and people socialized as women we hear so many messages that women just don’t know what they want and it always burns in me. First women like all different humans want so many different things (some of us even the things we were told to want). But we are also taught that there are serious repercussions if what we want doesn’t fit the current norms. So many of us have got out of the habit of even articulating to ourselves in our thoughts what our dream lives or contributions look like.
Why bother.
That’s not possible.
I don’t know enough.
No one will support me.
It will make people mad.
I’m not good enough.
I’m too old.
When you don’t know how to jump these learned doubts there is a simple sentence that helps move them to the side so you can squeeze by and articulate what you want.
I don’t have to do anything about it.
Just start with allowing yourself to have the thoughts about what you want without the pressure of taking action. You can decide that later. Get used to giving yourself permission to think about what you want.
We need what you really want to be in the world. Who you want to be in the world. What you want to do. That’s what’s missing on a vast scale.
