What if it's a trap?
Are you afraid bringing your dream idea to life means you might get stuck doing that forever?
I write a lot here and in my course to remind us all that nothing is possible outside of the present moment. Action is not possible in the past (everything you might feel or want because of things that happened then is still occurring now, in the present moment). And we can’t make decisions in the future. The things we do now will definitely affect our future selves, but that’s not when the actual activity occurs.
Lately, I’ve noticed a trend within myself and others I work with, particularly women over 50 who’ve been on the front line of patriarchy in its many guises for quite some time. The thing that is stopping them most now isn’t the future-perfect tense shifting of their younger selves—the when I achieve this I will be worthy… when someone loves me I will be valuable… They’ve been to that rodeo and know it’s a scam. Instead they are afraid that their ideas and decisions are traps that might claw back any of the independence, freedom, safety or comfort they have fought so hard to have. Fights that came at a great cost to themselves.
These fears are so valid! It has not been easy to get to where you are. Your peace IS precious. The way things have usually been done, even when it comes to doing your own business or creation, won’t have all the elements you need to protect your gains. You will have to be vigilant and curious about what pulls you back into the existing systems.
And yet, leaving what you dream undone is not going to work out either. Not for you or the world. We need what you are dreaming of bringing, particularly with your depth of experience and woundings, to help things get better.
The fear that even your dreams are a potential trap is actual another tricksy time-shift. When we are afraid of being trapped in the future we don’t commit to executing on our ideas at all. They swirl around inside us ungiven to the world. It’s not comfortable. And the thing that is missing is our belief that we are sovereign in our lives and able to end, extract, or change things. We have to trust ourselves to take the actions that will keep us as whole as possible.
So when your dream ideas are percolating within you next remember:
You don’t have to do it forever if you start it.
You don’t have to blow it up to change your mind.
Commitment is a day-by-day decision (I don’t care what the vows said).
You don’t have to let it hurt you.
You don’t have to do just one thing.
You can handle this.
