As someone who has made several significant life changes, moves, and reinventions, the one thing I think you need to be able to do it too is to know how to make decisions.
When I quit my job and moved to the UK in 2009 I encountered the most fascinating thing. I was suddenly soooooo magnetic to all the people who also dreamed about doing that. They wanted to get close to me to figure out how I did it. But the thing that became very clear to me is that despite wanting it in some form very badly, most of those people thought they couldn’t.
And instead of calling that what it was—a decision—they thought it was some magical thing that happened to me and was beyond them. But it was truly the lack of a decision to investigate how it could be done and take action on that which kept them from one of their dreams. And I think we do this a lot in our lives. We conclude that it couldn’t work for us because of some idea we have about how it is supposed to happen versus deciding to figure it out.
Are there details that have to be worked out? Yes.
Constraints about immigration and length of time that affect people differently? Yes.
Did I have to figure out how to import my dog too? Yes.
Was I willing to do anything to earn a living once I got there? Yes.
But I decided to work through each one because I had decided where I was going and just got to work. And before I knew it I had a work visa and a plane ticket. One step at a time.
That’s the permission you need. To make a decision. Even if it’s wrong and you need to make a different one next. Even if it’s difficult. You make the decision over and over to take the next step. And let’s be honest the messaging women typically receive doesn’t exactly have your back about your decision making prowess. Sometimes I don’t even have an opinion on what I want for dinner at a restaurant. It’s ok that it’s uncomfortable. You haven’t been trained to trust your decision making skills because it’s the doorway out of stuck, frozen and obedient. But if you want to build a life and a business that suits you, it’s a skill you are going to have to practice.
You’ve got this.
