As I age I find myself sinking deeper each year into the idea that the holidays are only for loving expression. And loving expression does not always look like we assume it does. Sure sometimes it comes in the form of a thoughtful gift. Sometimes a bit of cash is the answer someone most needs. Sometimes it’s a good hearty meal to hold off the cold and the first vegetable or meat they might have seen in a while.
There is no one-size loving expression that fits everyone.
Sometimes it’s room at the table for grief of those we have lost and broken hearts that forcing joviality on is an unkindness.
Sometimes it’s a table for one or leaving early and caring for your own well-being first until you have more capacity to direct that love outwards again.
Sometimes it’s happily listening to stories you’ve heard so many times before with the understanding that someday you won’t hear it.
Sometimes it’s just being open to experiencing the deepest disconnection between the splendid display in your home and the understanding of the violence happening in someone else’s. All at the same time.
The thing about Permission is remembering that you can choose your version of loving expression. It’s the most valuable one. The one you give with your heart, free of obligation. That’s the stuff that changes the world.
Much love,
Susie
