When was the last time you took stock of your thoughts? Our brains are like those dreaded closets and drawers filled with old technology cords, gifts we didn’t remember to give, shoes that didn’t quite fit, drawings from your third grade art class along with that gorgeous sweater you forgot you had and a love letter you haven’t seen in a while. Some of it is treasure and some just doesn’t need to be there anymore.
Do I know what this is actually for?
So what thoughts visit you that we want to set aside?
Are there things you no longer believe about yourself?
Unhelpful things?
Thoughts just make you feel frustration?
Refrains about obligations and other messages about things we don’t have to actually do unless we want them to?
Perfection nagging (it is SO LOUD).
Thoughts that don’t align with what you want and who you want to be or things you don’t want to do anymore (hello shaving my head and backpacking around Europe—I kept my hair and stayed in beautiful places thank you for your drama younger me).
Are there ideas imposed on you from the outside that you don’t agree with?
Write down these questions and give yourself a few moments to think about them.
What don’t I have to do?
What don’t I believe anymore?
What am I thinking when I’m really frustrated?
Where am I attached to thinking about perfection?
By naming these thoughts it will be so much easier to recognise them when they decide to make an appearance on your inner play list. Remember how you chose to respond to that thought and hit “Next” and make room for the helpful thoughts that are taking you towards the life you dream about.
