Are New Year Resolutions even effective?
Do you want the good news or the bad news first? I laugh as I write that because those thoughts are a perspective and one that we can change too. So here’s just the news about trying to make change in your life.
One thing I want you to know is that it’s not how bad you want something that equates to its actually happening. ‘Oh you must not have wanted it bad enough’ has never motivated anyone to commit to making a change. It’s an awful line. It shames you for being on a journey towards something and shame is never helpful when trying to make a change.
In order to make a change in your life the first thing you have to do is make a decision. It’s one of the foundational elements in giving yourself permission to create what you want in this world. (The other two are knowing what you want and taking action). Congratulations! A resolution is a decision. And don’t worry there is no blood vow with curses attached. You can always decide to change your mind. But right now you know what you want and you have decided to take action towards it. That puts you ahead of most of the people on the planet!
The other news about resolutions is that you have to keep making that decision. When other people tell you it’s not their preferred decision. When you don’t feel like taking action. When one of your actions don’t lead directly to the result you want. You have to keep making the decision that it is indeed what you want and start again from wherever you’re standing now.
You aren’t always going to feel about your resolution the way you do at the beginning of the year. That’s so normal!!! You won’t be the same person a week from now let alone six months from now. Make some space in that brilliant brain of yours for your relationship to your goal to settle and shift (or run away for a bit).
You’ve got this, you really do.
If you want to hear more about the three pieces of the Permission Cycle download my short audio course How to Give Yourself Permission today. Being able to orient yourself in the process of making changes in your life will help you achieve them. Imagine achieving what you wish for your world while building a relationship with yourself that is kind and includes all the parts of you—even the ones that don’t want to do it.
I’ll be back tomorrow with some more thoughts on helping you achieve your New Year’s goals.
