The New Year is rolling its way across the world tonight and people will be marking it in many different ways (some even abstaining all together).
It’s also a time when so many of us use the turning of the year to make resolutions and start new things. I love resolutions. They are so useful and they can also be harmful—just like most things. New Year resolutions are not for making you better or trying to do something you think will make you more valuable to others. They are for taking real steps towards aligning your life more closely with what you value.
When you hit the inevitable stumbling block that recalibrating your life includes your motivation for your resolution is critical. If you are trying to make change because you should be better, when you experience a failure or do old habits, you judge yourself for in fact not being better or more valuable and you stop trying at all. When you decide to try to make changes because you are aligning your actions with what you value it becomes possible to celebrate progress and tolerate setbacks. Your success becomes how much closer you are coming into alignment with yourself. All action becomes progress and any failures just more motivation to keep going and being creative.
In the next few days while you consider how you’re going to approach 2024 I hope you will keep this in mind. I’ll be writing a series over the next few days to help.
You’ve got this.
