Can you really go without social media?
How you tell people about what you do is a decision you get to make.

There’s always a moment in Resiliency Club sessions when someone on the other side of the video screen understands that they are actually in charge of how they speak to the world about their gifts/offerings. The moment they realize that they get to make decisions about what to do and what it costs them. It’s an internal sovereignty moment I believe is so necessary for creating a world where we are authentically connected to each other’s wellbeing.
Don’t get me wrong if you need to sell things to people to make your living you do have to talk to people about what you do and offer it to them. BUT you are not required to do it in a way that causes you pain. If you have in any way believed that you must bear the pain to go forward, you won’t have gotten very far anyway. The internal avoidance of that presumed pain has been your way of protecting yourself from it. We never fool ourselves.
So what does it actually look like to make a decision to go forwards offering your work without hurting yourself?
For many reasons social media can be an asset in reaching other people you might not know. For many people social media can cause you pain and overwhelm. You get to decide how you interact with it for your business. If you want to choose not to use it, you also decide that you are going to talk to people in a different way. The choice of place and time to talk about your work is different for everyone! Everyone has different needs, resources, and tolerances.
One of the first posts I ever wrote about Permission featured the old Paul Simon song 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. He doesn’t actually give you fifty, but the point is made that once you make a decision to do something there are numerable ways to accomplish it. It’s the same with marketing your offer. You can go full infront of camera social. You can automate information sharing on social that doesn’t require your presence. You can email everyone you know. You can put up posters. You can set up a referral system. You can use Eventbrite. You can go door-to-door. You can reach out to companies. You can join groups. You can open a store. You can set up on the side of the road. You can buy billboards or do a flier drop. You can write long-form on Substack!
You can do whatever feels good and that you will actually do. You choose the speed you can tolerate. You can experiment and change your mind. Once you realize that you are the expert on what doesn’t harm you, you will start to make decisions and take action so much more quickly.
“Just set yourself free” as Mr Simon said.
Have a great week.
