What does being in the present moment actually mean? To me being in the present moment is when your body and brain cooperatively experience the world around and inside you exactly as it is right now.
If I could write it like a Disney movie, when you were actively in the present moment there would be sparks and stars and rainbows coming out of your fingertips. It literally is the luminescent magical place where all your power resides. It’s the only place decisions are made and actions are taken.
It’s also the place where you feel your life. Which in the complicated way in the world we live in, is why you both try and skip some moments (or decades) and are also mad that you miss things or don’t remember them because your body/brain has a habit of getting you out of there because of past hurt or trauma.
Have you ever had the loveliest thing happen to you and immediately you are worrying about the next thing? When we’ve experienced a lot of challenges and trauma particularly as children, feeling those moments wasn’t a good thing. So we’ve trained ourselves to skip ahead many times out of hope for change to a situation we weren’t in control of. But now as adults in situations where you are safe and something lovely is happening you want to be there to DWELL and luxuriate in the present moment.
But you can’t because parts of you are everywhere.
Past you has set off the alarm in your body because of intense feelings—it doesn’t matter that they are good feelings, just the intensity is enough for past you to go into full protection mode.
Future you has run off down the road to make sure nothing is coming.
Present you is confused by your unease and overwhelmed questioning whether you are capable of true happiness.
But that’s not true. Happiness is yours. And the best way to calm those other versions of yourself is to come back into your body, grounded here in the present moment. It’s not an elaborate event. It can be a breath. You can use one of your senses like scent or touch to regulate your nervous system. You can decide to give yourself permission to be happy. You can decide to do the work to call all those frightened bits back into the moment and reassure yourself that you are capable of experiencing what is happening. It’s not easy at first and you won’t always catch it or be capable rounding all the bits up into the same spot. But it can be done. It takes lots of practise until one very fine day it happens automatically.
