You know how in every biopic of some successful person they always have the great failures to include. It’s like glorious failures are part of the recipe for achieving big things. And they are. A failure is proof that we believe something is possible because why else would we try?
I grew up watching figure skating. I hadn’t really watched it in about 20 years. When I was a kid the triple axel was the big thing. And then this Canadian kid named Kurt Browning came along and started attempting quadruple toe-loops in his performances. It was electrifying! Would he attempt it? Would he land it? Oh my what a thrill when he did. His chances of earning a medal placement completely lost if he tried but didn’t land it. He was doing something no one else could yet and his failures had a real cost. But he just kept doing it!
Fast forward I was at my Mom’s the other day and she was watching skating. And these kids were throwing quads around like it was standard operating procedure. So many quads of so many different kinds. To my Mom it seemed normal because she had been continuously watching all that time. But for me it was a shocking difference to take in. Browning’s glorious failures had elevated a whole sport because all of a sudden people believed it was possible. Last year for the first time in competition Ilia Malinin landed the quadruple axel. The most difficult jump that exists (just yet). Once people believe that something is possible we are magical creatures at doing it.
So today I ask what’s your quad jump? That thing you think you can do, but aren’t sure it will work out. Are you ready to fail gloriously so you can inspire yourself and others about what is possible?
