The complexity of the times we are inhabiting is challenging. It is requiring us to whittle and sift through a lot of noise to connect with our own values and act accordingly. It’s so difficult to not conflate the sovereignty of knowing your own truth or acknowledgement of our power and impact as individuals with the worship of individualism. And yet this is some of the most important work we are charged with now.
But how are we supposed to do that?
It’s like permission. I used to get tired about writing about the process of Giving Yourself Permission, but then I would see another post or reel reaching millions that said the secret to having everything was to “give yourself permission” without ever addressing how the hell you actually do that.
I’ve linked to my little audio course above for the long version, but the short version is you have to decide you get to try and then take action towards what you want. But the thing I think trips people up happens way before they can decide. Because in order to make a decision you must believe and understand that you have choices.
And I know, not every choice is fabulous. Sometimes we are making decisions from some pretty shitty selections. But the act of conscious choice is a connection to your sovereignty and power. And the more we reconnect to that on the individual level the more we will see our choices collectively too. We can’t build a world for all that doesn’t happen in you.
That is how we will make change for the better.
That is how we will be able to take of each other and those more vulnerable.
That is how you will do the work you long to in the world.
If you are ever really stuck or spiralling ask yourself (or someone you trust) to help you list your choices. Our brains like to forget how many we actually have—even if we would never act on them, a lightness returns when we understand there are options. That we do have a say if even in the smallest ways by refusing to do one of them.
